White was a young doctor in Franklin Park in the 1950s, he noticed a sense of frustration among his patients who wanted to breast-feed their children, but had no resources or support. He suggested to his wife Mary and her friends that they form a group to offer that support during a time when breast-feeding was often discouraged. Dr. White named the organization and supported it at conventions and conferences, he also was the first of many medical professional to provided the medical consulting service information for new mothers with special situations, medical questions for example: how different medications effected a mothers milk and if her breast milk for her baby would be adversely effected. He raised the bar for all to be more informed, in the prevention of any unnecessary disruption for the new family. Dr. White was our nation's foremost leader & expert in home birth. From that point in 1956, seven women formed La Leche League, including Mariam Tompson . "His impact on society has been phenomenal," said Marcia Lutostanski, acting executive director of La Leche International. "He improved the physical and emotional health of millions of babies and their mothers through the breast-feeding relationship worldwide. "His detailed training manual "Emergency Childbirth" was designed for anyone who called a 911 operator with an unexpected delivery. 911 Operators, Emergency Medical Technicians, Emergency Rooms Personal, Police and the Fire Dept personal all follow the procedures outline in his book "Emergency Childbirth" and still do today. |
